Swaziland is the smallest country in Africa, landlocked and bordered by South Africa and Mozambique. But the country’s size belies the large amount of attractions for tourists within its borders. On the flight to Swaziland, travellers have a sneak preview of the stunning mountains, rainforests and deserts of the country’s landscape. There are a number of game reserves in the country, among them the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and the Mkhaya Game Reserve. The latter is home to endangered species such as white and black rhino, elephants and antelope. But arguably the country’s most popular animal is the hippopotamus, still seen in many of the rivers of Swaziland. The country has a reputation not just for excellent wildlife spotting, but also for some of the friendliest people in Africa and the safest travel. Crime here is low, which makes a flight to Swaziland the beginning of one of the more relaxed holidays to be found in Africa.

Swaziland has a subtropical climate. Summer temperatures range between 15–25 degrees, while in winter the average temperatures are 15-19 degrees. At higher altitudes rainfall varies from 1,000 to 1,600mm annually, while in the lowlands it averages 500 to 600mm.
Peak season:
Visit between June and September as these are the coolest and driest months. The Umhlanga Reed Dance Day (depending on the position of the moon) takes place in August. Independence/Somhlolo Day falls on 6 September.
Off season:
October to May are the wettest months of the year. This is the time for off-peak travel and cheap flights to Swaziland. October is the warmest month. Incwala Day, which marks the start of the Swazi new year, falls in December or January (depending on the moon).

Swaziland is the smallest country in the southern hemisphere. The main airport is at Matsapha, north of Manzini, and there are small airstrips dotted around the country.
