One of the UK’s warmest and sunniest cities due to its south-westerly location and shelter from surrounding hills, Bristol enjoys warm, sunny summers and cold, wet winters, with July and August generally the warmest months and December, January and February the coldest. Snow is rare but falls between mid-November to mid-April if at all.

Getting around Bristol

Central Bristol is compact enough to mean that most locations are easily walkable, with many pedestrianised streets and picturesque quayside walking routes. There are also many cycle paths and routes should you wish to rent a bike. The First Bristol company also offers inexpensive public bus services, with the 8 and 9 routes particularly useful for visitors as they travel through the city centre and West End as well as shopping area Broadmead. 

What is good to know if travelling to Bristol?

• At-Bristol is a science and technology education and exploration centre based in a former railway building and is sure to enthrall inquisitive minds of all ages. It offers over 300 interactive exhibits on subjects ranging from the human brain, aviation, space travel, human anatomy as well as containing a planetarium. 
• Bristol Cathedral was founded in 1140 as an Augustinian abbey and renowned for its Norman gatehouse, gateway and chapterhouse, the last being one of the most impressive of its kind in Britain. Its chapels, meanwhile, are notable for their stunning stained glass windows and carvings. 
• Bristol Zoo, founded in 1836, is one of Britain’s foremost such institutions, having been home to the first chimpanzee born in Europe and the first black rhino born in Britain as well as the setting for popular television show Animal Magic. It features a gorilla island, penguin and seal coasts, a reptile house, butterfly house and aquarium among other attractions. 
• The ss Great Britain, designed by famed engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is preserved in a dry dock at Great Western Dockyard and open for tours. The vessel is the world’s first iron-hulled, screw-driven, steam-powered ocean liner, a marvel in its day and a fascinating testament to the advances made by the great thinkers of the Victorian era. 
• The Clifton Suspension Bridge, completed in 1864, is another of Brunel’s creations and one of Bristol’s most iconic landmarks. The bridge spans Avon Gorge, offering breathtaking views, and links the Clifton ward of Bristol with Leigh Woods, an area of woodland popular for walking and cycling among Bristolians.
