The main airport of the collection of islands that make up Vanuatu is Bauerfield International Airport (VLI) in Port-Vila, Vanuatu’s biggest city located on its third-biggest island, Efate. Flights to Vanuatu from Hong Kong range in flying time from 15h 20min to 28h, with one or two stopovers.
There are no direct flights to Vanuatu from Hong Kong. Vanuatu flight deals are available with Fiji Airways via Nadi International Airport (NAN) in Fiji. You can also find cheap flights to Vanuatu with a combination of airlines including Hong Kong Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Air Vanuatu and Aircalin.
Vanuatu consists of some 65 inhabited islands, and travel between the islands is possible with air or water transport options. There is a domestic flight route between the three major islands, Efate (Port-Vila), Espíritu Santo (Luganville) and Tanna, in a larger aircraft. The flight from Port-Vila to Luganville on Santo takes 50min and to Tanna takes 40min with Air Vanuatu. Smaller aircraft are used between the smaller islands, as there are only grass landing strips, and the flights often have multiple stops along the route. You can also travel between islands by ferry, cargo boat or banana boat. It’s best to ask at the wharf on the island for your best boat option. To get around Port-Vila, you can make use of the bus service. These are usually minivans, which can be identified by the letter B on their number plate. To get around Luganville, taxis are your best option — their number plates start with a T.
There are three main islands in Vanuatu – Efate, Espíritu Santo and Tanna. You will fly into Port-Vila, Vanuatu’s capital on Efate. On this island, you can explore the markets of Port-Vila, go kayaking in the Blue Lagoon, take a trip to the Mele Cascades, or a day trip to Pele Island to go snorkelling. Espíritu Santo, locally known as Santo, is Vanuatu’s biggest island. It is a combination of tropical jungles, white sandy beaches like Champagne Beach, and beautiful limestone blue holes where you can swim in crystal clear water. You can enjoy a wreck dive of the SS Coolidge or you can explore the submerged WWII vehicles and machines at Million Dollar Point. On Tanna Island, you can visit Mt Yasur, the world’s most accessible active volcano. You can also explore the incredible Blue Cave, which is only accessible by swimming underwater. You can learn more about Vanuatu’s friendly and warm indigenous culture by visiting cultural villages like Yakel Village. Finally, you can unwind in the Sulphur Bay Hot Springs. That’s a brief summary, but there are also many other islands worth exploring in Vanuatu if you have the time.
If you are a Hong Kong passport holder, you do not need a visa to visit Vanuatu for tourism for up to 90 days. Your passport must have at least six months validity from the date that you arrive in Vanuatu.
