The resort of Nerja, at the east end of the Costa Del Sol, is the perfect summerholiday destination for those who don’t want long journeys. Flights to Nerja arrive at Malaga Airport, from where the transfer is minimal. Once you’ve completed the short journey, Nerjaoffers sun, sand and all major water sports including water-skiing and sailing. The attractive beach has real white powdery sand and small coves to explore if you want to get further away the crowd.

But travellers book flights to Nerja for its stunning scenery as well as its beach life. The old town is still a mass of cobbled winding streets with many bars and cafes and there are no concrete skyscrapers in sight. Instead, it is surrounded by magnificent mountains to the east. There is a spectacular palm-lined walk through the heart of the town from the cliffs down to the beach.

What is good to know if travelling to Nerja?

  • Go to a concert in a cave. During the summer months you can catch local and international performers in a huge cave which has been adapted as a concert hall. During the day the caves are open from 10am–8pm as a tourist attraction and you can see the largest known stalactite (63cm in length). Don’t forget siesta time – there is no entrance from 2-4pm. Buses travel the two mile journey every hour from the bus stand at calle San Miguel in the north-east of the town.
  • The only downside to the lack of high-rise blocks is that accommodation can be limited. Check it out beforehand especially in high season in the summer. The campsite is three miles east of the town on the main N340 and is open all year round with pool, bar and restaurant. Nearby Almunecar is more likely to have accommodation if you are just passing through.
  • Local food is best value with fried fish (pescaito frito) the speciality. Red mullet is particularly good: ask for De La Doncella. But, you will also be able to satisfy any cravings for full English breakfast.
  • The easiest way to the resort is to take a bus or taxi from the airport. Malaga is closest, just half an hour away, and Marbella one hour away. Once in Nerja you can hire mopeds to have your own independent transport.- and explore without walking up and down hills.
  • The gardens of Capistrano Playa are worth seeing and go down to the local beach Burritano Beach. Nerja’s biggest claim to fame are the nearby pre-historic Caves (Cuevas de Nerja) which are open during the day and evening.
  • When is the best time to fly to Nerja?

Peak Season: June to October is peak season in Nerja, and during this time it is advisable to book Nerja flights and accommodation well in advance. National Day is October 12 when the Spanish are also on holiday. Off Season: While cheap flights to Nerja and discounted hotel rooms can be found during the wintertime, keep in mind that many hotels, shops and restaurants may be closed.
