Earnest yachtsmen and fishing enthusiasts have been flocking to the Abacos Islands for years but most holidaymakers have yet to discover these Caribbean gems. Situated in the northern Bahamas, the Abacos comprise many small islands including Wood Cay, Elbow Cay, Lubbers Quarters Cay, Green Turtle Cay, and the two largest ones – Great Abaco and Little Abaco.
Slightly resembling Maine in New England, Abaco’s symbolic landmark is that of a red and white striped lighthouse. Once used as a safe harbour for British loyalists during the American Revolution, today Abaco is a firm favourite among sailors who can easily dock in its marinas and fishermen who can hire boats. Golf enthusiasts booking flights to Abaco should pack their golf clubs; Abaco has a spectacular 18-hole champion golf course overlooking two miles of turquoise blue sea.
