Bourges, France is part of France’s Loire Valley, located in the central part of the country. The area does not have major international airports; it’s served by a series of regional airports that offer international flights, including Nantes, Poitiers, and Tours.
Like all cities in the area, Bourges does not have its own dedicated airport; the nearest airport is Tours St. Symphorien, located in the northeastern part of Tours.
The Tours airport is central to many cities in the Loire Valley; it’s often referred to as the Tours Val de Loire airport; a complex series of rail networks make it easy to access other cities in the region.
Tours is about 132 km from Bourges, so travelers should plan on at least another two hours to reach their destinations.
Flights from the UK to Tours are limited to London’s Stansted Airport. Flights from Stanstead to Tours take approximately 1h 20m; the airport offers at least four flights per week.
Flights to Nantes are more plentiful throughout the UK. Flights to Nantes can be obtained from Liverpool, Bristol, Cardiff, as well as from London’s Gatwick Airport.
Nantes is much further from Bourges, however; it takes nearly 3h 40m by car to get to and from the airport.
The shortest flight to Nantes is out of London’s Gatwick Airport, averaging around 1h 30m. Liverpool to Nantes flights take approximately 8h 15m; Bristol flights are substantially shorter, averaging around 3h 30m. Cardiff flights into Nantes are slightly longer, averaging 3h 50m.
Travellers from Edinburgh and Birmingham can fly into Poitiers. Poitiers is slightly closer to Bourges; it takes about 2h 35m to get from the airport to the city.
Flight times from Edinburgh to Poitiers require two stops and often involve overnight layovers. Consequently, flight times vary from 10h 55m to nearly 16h. Birmingham flights to Poitiers take even longer, requiring three stops. Without layovers, all flights from Birmingham take around 21h 36m; with layovers, they take over 24h.
Ryanair offers nonstop flights to Tours St. Symphorien from London Stansted. They currently offer four direct flights per week.
The easiest way to get from Tours to Bourges is by car. The airport features several kiosks, including Avis, Alamo, Europcar, Goldcar, National, Sunnycars, Citier, and other vendors. Taxis are also plentiful outside the airport.
Travelers can also take the train; this takes approximately 1h 55m; buses and taxis are accessible from the airport. Blue Wire buses depart from the airport to the train station every 20 minutes.
Travelers coming from Nantes or Poitiers can also drive or take trains; as the distance to Bourges is greater, driving is the fastest option.
Like most cities in the Loire Valley, Bourges is beautiful and incredibly historic. Bourges is home to beautiful cathedrals, public gardens, as well as a picturesque Old Town district, featuring charming diamond-pattern timber houses, cafes, and restaurants.
Some of these striking structures are also museums, most notably the Musée de Barry and the Musée Estève.
