• Find out about York’s Viking past at Jorvik Viking Centre. It’s a theme-park–meets-museum affair: you can smell the smells and hear people talking as they would have done years ago.
• Walk round the massive city walls which have been here for 800 years and are very impressive. Bootham Bar is a good place to get on. Then go and have a coffee or meal before you search out those second-hand bookshops.
• Love trains? Visit Britain’s biggest railway museum. Masses of carriages dating back to when the Victorians made it all happen on two rails. Mallard, the well known record breaking engine is here.
